Wired Taken to Task for Hackintosh Video

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...ckintosh_video/

"Wired received an unexpected wake up call on Wednesday when Apple contacted the publication with a request that it pull an article showing how to install Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware."

The author of the article, Brian X. Chen, jumped the gun a little when hearing the news by posting on his Twitter account that Wired was being sued. Turns out Apple lawyers only "contacted" wired about the post, but shortly after this contact Wired removed the how-to-video from the site. You would think they would have seen this one coming since Apple is so aggressive about protecting their product (Psystar v. Apple comes to mind). It is never a good idea to poke the bear.

It's My Software! No, It's Mine! Psystar vs. Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 02:00 PM

"Psystar is still tilting at legal windmills in its battle against Apple, this time asserting its right to do whatever it wants with products obtained legally from Apple."

And the battle continues! Psystar filed amended paperwork in court stating they had the right to resell the OS X software under the first sale doctrine, since they purchased it legally through Apple and other resellers. The problem with this argument, as outlined in the article, is that the courts (for the most part anyway) have disagreed, saying the first sale doctrine doesn't apply to software. Apple contends that the Mac OS X licensing agreement clearly forbids installation on any non-Apple hardware. I don't know about anyone else, but I have no interest in purchasing a 3rd party machine that just happens to be running OS X on it, I'd rather have a complete unit with hardware built with the software in mind. How about anyone else, any interest in buying from Psystar?

Slingbox and Dish, Together At Last!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

"Recently, digital cable provider DISH TV announced plans to incorporate Slingbox technology into several of its upcoming digital video recorder set-set boxes."

Since I have Dish, and am away from my DVR for sometimes week at a time, this is a welcome addition. This information is already on the Slingbox website and they are in a private beta that you can sign up for here. In a previous post in the forums, I mentioned that having the Slingbox viewer for the iPhone put the Slingbox at the top of my "want to buy" list. Well, this just pushed it to my "buy it now" list. Any Slingbox users out there? If so how do you like it?
